Scared little Gandalf
« Thread started on: Mar 3rd, 2003, 9:32pm » |

When Manwe asked for Gandalf to go into Middle Earth to help in the descurtion and over throwing of Sauron Gandalf was actually scared and didn't want to go! Now this actually helped him out i beleive in the long run because he went without a big ego unlike some *cough cough Sauruman* My question is, if you had been an Istari and was asked to give up the perfect land and go help in the fight against Sauron, would you go?

That's hard to say in my opinion. I probally would have been like Gandalf and ant to stay.
p.s. It was a good thing for Gandalf to fear Sauron, for he was the only one who stayed true to his mission (although we don't know about the two Blue Istari).

i think Gandalf was responsible in turning down the offer, I belive he felt he would only stand in the way because of his fear, thought this is what caused his great strength against him aswell...

If Manwe asked me to go, I would certainly go: or do whatever he wanted if I thought he would want me to say elsewise. Afterall, No one disobeys Manwe and gets away with it.

Definelty not. I would go but i would have to have some extreme faith in his decision which might be hard to find.

How dare you underestimate the Elder King, who knowest among all the inhabitants of Ea the greatest of the One's mind. Faith in me all shall have, or else they shall have need of fear. . . (that being said, Tolkien is explicit in Letter 156 that the plan of the Valar "failed," only to be saved by Eru who enlarged it by sending back Gandalf with enhanced powers and a greater mission).

technically no: just because the plan failed, doesn't mean that it wasn't the only or right thing to do. But he was capable of making mistakes of judgement.

But of corse. Lol I was only kidding. I know that it actaully all worked out in the end and Eru must have known (he knows everything) that it would work out this way and so it all worked out great.

I would probably go, I can't exactly refuse and stay in the Undying Lands can I? Who were the other two Istari? Pallando and who?

Alatar and Pallando; whose names are also given as Morimehtar and Romestamo in a later text.
